This Web-based interactive tool provides clinicians with a single-question quick screen about past year alcohol, tobacco, illegal and nonmedical prescription drug use. If the quick screen is positive for alcohol or tobacco, additional resources are provided. If the patient answers positively for illegal or nonmedical prescription drug use, there is an option to continue with the NIDA-modified ASSIST (NMASSIST). Adapted from the World Health Organization’s Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), the NMASSIST guides the clinician through more in-depth screening questions. Based on the patient's responses, the tool generates a substance involvement score that suggests the level of intervention needed. The tool also provides links to resources for conducting a brief intervention and treatment referral, if warranted.
NIDA's mission is to lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction.
This charge has two critical components. The first is the strategic support and conduct of research across a broad range of disciplines. The second is ensuring the rapid and effective dissemination and use of the results of that research to significantly improve prevention and treatment and to inform policy as it relates to drug abuse and addiction.
