The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the primary federal agency for improving health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable, has launched its new Open Data website, https://data.hrsa.gov.

HRSA’s programs help those in need of high quality primary health care, people living with HIV/AIDS, pregnant women, and mothers. HRSA also supports the training of health professionals, the distribution of providers to areas where they are needed most and improvements in health care delivery. HRSA oversees organ, bone marrow and cord blood donation. It compensates individuals harmed by vaccination, and maintains databases that protect against health care malpractice, waste, fraud and abuse.

HRSA’s new website features interactive maps, dashboards, query tools, fact sheets, and downloadable data related to HRSA-funded Health Centers, grants, loan repayment and scholarship programs, Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), organ donation, and other programs. It provides national summary data and lets you drill-down to the state, county, regional, and Congressional district levels.

HRSA held numerous focus groups over the past year on ways to make the agency’s data more open and accessible. The message from users was clear: organize the data, make it interactive, provide sophisticated visualizations, and make it mobile-friendly.

All of the data previously found on the HRSA Data Warehouse website is available here. However, instead of static reports, users will find easy-to-use dashboards, digital maps, and intuitive query tools to answer a wide range of questions about HRSA’s programs.
